Essayist, Poet, Perfumista

I write essays and poetry and every hybrid in between — prose poetry, lyric essays, haibun — and I write craft and critical work on these as well, most recently Crafting the Lyric Essay: Strike a Chord, available from Bloomsbury. I also am an editor — anthology (including the forthcoming Rose Metal Press Field Guide to Writing the Lyric Essay), freelance, and at Assay: A Journal of Nonfiction Studies — and reviewer, mainly of books by women/nonbinary authors from small presses, although I’ve also been writing fun microreviews on Twitter where I describe a recent read and pair it with its perfume equivalent under #perfumebookpairing

After nearly twenty years teaching at the university level, my family and I made the leap to Minneapolis, where I’m happily infiltrating its arts (and craft beer) community.

Currently, I teach with the Minnesota Prison Writing Workshop, Normandale Community College, the University of Minnesota, and occasionally elsewhere.

When not writing and teaching, I collect and sniff perfume, forage for mushrooms, spend too much time on social media, and answer to “Mom.”
